  79. WELCOME TO DYNAMIC GIN!
  80.  
  81. Dynamic Gin (TM) is a computer version of the classic Gin Rummy card
  82. game. The Dynamic Gin display shows cards for your hand, an opponent's
  83. hand, a discard pile, and a stock (unused portion of the deck) much
  84. like you would see them in a real Gin Rummy card game. There is also a
  85. rectangle where you deposit your final discard when you are ready to
  86. end a hand (knock).

  88. Dynamic Gin is easy to play. You simply use the mouse to select and
  89. drag cards between the stock or discard piles and your own hand or to
  90. rearrange cards in your hand. You can also take and discard cards using
  91. context menus (right mouse button). The status bar at the bottom of the
  92. Dynamic Gin window indicates whose turn it is and what play options are
  93. available.

  95. If you've never played Gin Rummy, it's not hard to learn. The Dynamic
  96. Gin on-line help contains descriptions of the object of the game,
  97. rules, terminology, and scoring. (Remember that in Help, you can click
  98. on any highlighted (colored, underlined) text at any time to jump to
  99. that topic.) You can probably also figure out how to play without using
  100. Help if you watch the instructions on the Dynamic Gin status bar.

  102. There are a number of different variations of Gin Rummy. The variation
  103. many people know is Simple Gin. Dynamic Gin includes two other
  104. variations: Standard Gin and Oklahoma Gin. Simple Gin is probably the
  105. easiest variation to learn, but we recommend you try all the
  106. variations.
  107.  
  108. Many people who play Simple Gin ignore the normal rules about passing
  109. at the beginning of a hand. If you're not familiar with passing, pay
  110. close attention to the Dynamic Gin status bar and/or look at the
  111. discussion of passing in Dynamic Gin Help. Alternatively you might want
  112. to try playing with the Eleven/Ten dealing method, which you can select
  113. under Options, Dealing.

  170. ===== Installation =====================================
  171.  
  172. To install Dynamic Gin on your computer:
  173.  
  174.     1.  First locate the Dynamic Gin installation program DGSETUP.EXE.
  175.         If you are installing from a CyberSym Technologies installation
  176.         disk, make sure the disk is inserted in your disk drive. If you
  177.         have obtained the Dynamic Gin installation package from some
  178.         other source (e.g. a shareware CD-ROM or an online forum), you
  179.         may need to decompress the package with a decompression utility
  180.         before you find DGSETUP.EXE.
  181.     2.  From the Windows 95 shell interface Start Menu, select Run.
  182.     3.  Type the full path for the DGSETUP.EXE file. (If you are
  183.         installing from an installation disk, this is A:\DGSETUP.EXE
  184.         where A is the letter of your disk drive).
  185.     4.  Choose OK.
  186.     5.  Follow the instructions on the screen.
  187.  
  188. The installation program will let you choose the location where you
  189. want Dynamic Gin on your hard drive. The install program searches for
  190. any previous installation of Dynamic Gin. If you have a previous
  191. installation (either 16-bit or 32-bit) we recommend you install
  192. Dynamic Gin 32-bit Edition into the same location as the previous
  193. installation. You will automatically retain any Dynamic Gin
  194. registration that you had previously activated. You will also retain
  195. any player configurations you might have established under the
  196. previous installation (see "Configuring Dynamic Gin for More than One
  197. User"). If you elect to install Dynamic Gin 32-bit Edition into the
  198. same location as a previous installation of Dynamic Gin 16-bit Edition,
  199. the install program will next ask if you want to remove the 16-bit
  200. edition.  Under most circumstances, it is best to remove the 16-bit
  201. edition.  However, if you regularly run an older version of Windows
  202. in addition to Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 on your computer, you might
  203. want to keep the 16-bit edition of Dynamic Gin to run under the older
  204. version of Windows.
  205.  
  206. If you install the new Dynamic Gin version into a different location
  207. and had previously registered Dynamic Gin, then you may need to
  208. activate the registration for the new Dynamic Gin installation. To do
  209. this, start the new version of Dynamic Gin, go to Options, Activate
  210. Registration, and enter the registered user name and user authorization
  211. code you received when you originally registered Dynamic Gin.
  212.  
  213. Once you have completed the installation, you do not need to keep the
  214. DGSETUP.EXE installation program on your hard disk. It is however a 
  215. good idea to keep a backup floppy disk copy of the Dynamic Gin
  216. installation package (or the original installation disk), including 
  217. DGSETUP.EXE.
  218.  
  219. There are a couple of other things to note about the installation:
  220.  
  221. a.  Folders/sub-folders created during installation do not appear in 
  222.     the Windows Explorer until you select the View, Refresh option in 
  223.     the Explorer.
  224.  
  225. b.  If you so choose, the installation program creates a program folder
  226.     (of whatever name you choose) containing several icons. This folder
  227.     appears wherever you designate on the Start menu. However, in 
  228.     the Windows 95 shell interface, program folders don't automatically 
  229.     stay on your desktop. If you want the Dynamic Gin folder to always 
  230.     appear on your desktop (as opposed to just on the Start menu), 
  231.     follow these instructions:
  232.  
  233.     --In the Explorer, find the folder (Dynamic Gin or whatever name
  234.       you chose during installation) which is typically located inside 
  235.       the Programs folder inside the Start Menu folder inside the 
  236.       Windows folder.
  237.  
  238.     --Using the mouse secondary (right) button, drag this Dynamic 
  239.       Gin folder to your desktop.  
  240.  
  241.     --Release the folder and select Create Shortcut(s) Here on the
  242.       popup menu that appears.
  243.  
  244.     --When the folder appears on your desktop, select the title
  245.       underneath, and edit the text title to be whatever you want.
  246.  
  247. During the installation process, the install program creates a file 
  248. called INSTALL.LOG in the Dynamic Gin main directory. DO NOT move, 
  249. edit, or delete this file if you ever intend to upgrade or uninstall 
  250. Dynamic Gin.

  252. When you first start Dynamic Gin after installation, under a few 
  253. conditions, you may get a warning message about a "Dynamic Gin 
  254. Backdrop Scenery Error". If so, Dynamic Gin runs with a default 
  255. background after this message appears. In this case, you should either 
  256. select Options, Scenery to load a backdrop scenery image, or you can 
  257. check the Disable Scenery option under Options, Preferences to keep 
  258. scenery off and disable this message in future sessions.

  297. DISTRIBUTION.  You are free to distribute Dynamic Gin as shareware to
  298. others, provided you distribute all original files without modification,
  299. and provided you accept no compensation. No one may distribute any
  300. Dynamic Gin user authorization code to any other individual or group,
  301. with the sole exception that a valid owner of a registered license for
  302. Dynamic Gin may transfer that license and its user authorization code to
  303. another individual. When such a transfer is made, the original owner must
